Should you invest in yourself for a transition to a better job and career path?

If you’re in a job that’s killing you, or you’re out of job and worried about paying the bills, why not do an ROI calculation on hiring a job search and career transition expert? Below is a simple way to do it:

On a scale of 1 to 10 rate these aspects of your current job

  • Total Compensation - Including benefits and perks

  • Psychic Salary™ - All of the qualitative aspects of the work you do. Feeling like what you do matters and enjoying going to work.

  • Work/Life Balance - For example PTO and leave policies and working weekends and evenings

  • Opportunity for Promotion - Do they promote from within? Is that important to you?

While few people will end up with a perfect 50 score, if it's below 25 do you really want to stay there?

Example: Mary, a single mom, reports that she hates her job. The stress to perform and extensive travel is wearing her down mentally and physically and she doesn’t have time to attend her daughter’s softball games or her son’s lacrosse games. Here's her ROI calculation expressed as a risk/reward ratio:

  • She’s making $300k with a company car and decent healthcare and childcare benefits and perks so she rates Total Comp an 8.

  • When she takes stock of the Psychic Salary she’s getting the score is 2.

  • Work/Life Balance is a 2.

  • Opportunity for Promotion - Her company does tend to promote from within but more responsibility means more stress so she rated that factor a 5.

  • Total Score = 17

As a result, Mary made an investment in herself and hired an experienced job search and career transition expert. With his help she identified a company and role that provides a lower total comp plan but one that will provide a high Psychic Salary. He also helped her secure and negotiate an offer with additional PTO. Now she’s working for and with people she respects and trusts, travels much less; and most importantly she’s doing work she loves and living her personal mission by serving others.

I would say the ROI was excellent. What do you think?
